WSLR Throws pre-Mardi Gras party with Beth McKee and her Funky Time Band

WSLR Community Radio helps get you ready for Mardi Gras with Beth McKee and her Funky Time Band on Friday, February 24th at 8pm at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center.

Imagine the female love child of Dusty Springfield and Doug Sahm with Dr. John acting as the midwife……and you’ll have an idea of the southern roots music with elements of rock, blues, soul, gospel and country that defines artist Beth McKee.??This show will focus on Beth’s New Orleans-centric material, both original and cover.  There’ll be a Cajun dance lesson at 7:30pm and plenty of room for dancing, so wear your dancing shoes. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 on the day of the show.

McKee is a Southern singer/songwriter/pianist/accordion player backed by seasoned musicians.  Born in Havana, Cuba, drummer/percussionist Juan Perez has recorded and toured with the Bellamy Brothers, Noble Watts, Lester Chambers, Rootboy Slim, Alex Taylor and Sonny Rhodes, to name a few.  Bassist Gerry Wilhelm and Juan have played as a rhythm section for decades so the same track record pretty much applies to Gerry. Young guitarist Grant Peyton is the newest member of the band, and at 22 years old, the youngest by far. Beth says he's an old soul trapped in a young man's body.

A former member of the popular New Orleans country-cajun group Evangeline (MCA Records), McKee toured extensively behind two critically acclaimed albums.  L.A. Weekly raved Beth’s piano is “worthy of some Jerry Lee Lewis arson.”??The Orlando Sentinel’s Jim Abbott, who compares Beth’s vocals to Bonnie Raitt and Lucinda Williams, notes: “On piano, her driving left hand recalls Professor Longhair.”  More recently Downbeat Magazine’s four-star review states that Beth “honors blues, r&b, gospel and Southern rock traditions just as surely as she gives them contemporary voice in her fresh-as-a-Gulf-breeze music.”
