Gail Gerdes, BEST ALBUM OF ALL TIME: Dire Straits “Brothers in Arms”

The Sarasota Post Record Album of the Week

The 1980s.  It was a very pivotal time in my life.  During that decade, music began to play a very major part in my life for enjoyment and for solace.  My record collection was vast and diverse.  I have to admit, I did own EVERY Dire Straits record on the market and loved each one of them.

Mark Knopfler’s deep, sensual vocals was topped only by his distinct, melodic guitar licks.  For me, music is not just about the melody or the chorus, but the deep meaning of the lyrics and how those lyrics dance throughout the composition.  It had to have meaning to me; a story or message.  Whether whimsical or serious, every Dire Straits song said something to me.

Everyone knows that popular Money for Nothing tune from that album.  That was a fun song about MTV and how it changed the music industry.  But, the title song of the album “Brothers in Arms” spoke to me on a very deep level.  A message about standing together as one.  A message about the terrible effects of war.  A message about how “..every man must die”; but most importantly, “We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms”.  It’s a message that will withstand the test of time and today, more than ever before, maybe a message that we all should be reminded of.  Those words, combined with that sultry voice and amazing guitar work just sent an arrow into my heart and still does to this day.

NEXT SATURDAY- Greg "Stretch" Gerdes writes about his favorite record album.
