Dana Lawrence- My Favorite Record Album by Derek and the Dominos

My Favorite Record Album

Dana Lawrence is the lead singer for Kettle of Fish...... I wasn’t into the music of the eighties when I grew up in the eighties. It seemed vapid and contrived, lacking the passion and depth of the music I was discovering from the sixties and seventies. My favorite bands were the Police and Led Zeppelin, and I spent much of my paychecks (much to the dismay of my mother) on cassette tapes trying to discover new favorites.

Then I discovered Eric Clapton. Soulful voice and searing guitar mixed with what I thought were both fun and thoughtful lyrics. I bought Derek and the Dominos “Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs” probably when I was 14 or 15, and it was the antidote to the hair bands and electronica of the day.

I wasn’t a blues guy, yet, but this wasn’t blues to me. It was an emotional rollercoaster with Duane Allman and Eric Clapton’s interplay of guitars, the soulful voice of Bobby Whitlock, the heartbreaking lyrics that seemed to call to me. I walked in a daze with my Walkman blaring Keep on Growing, Anyday and Why Does Love Got to be so Sad, playing air guitar to the riff on Layla, and singing the angelic falsetto on Bell Bottomed Blues. My budding romantic heart felt the pain in Eric and Bobby’s voices and it all came together for this adolescent.

And now, years later, Derek and the Dominos has stood the test of time and fads to remain my favorite album, 30 years later. I’m grateful to play a number of the songs from the album with Kettle of Fish, and even more grateful that Bobby Whitlock liked our rendition of “Anyday” live at the Cox Capitol Theater in Macon, Georgia. I hope to do a tribute show somewhere down the road where we perform the entire album. Thanks to Eric and Duane, as well as Bobby, Carl and Jim, for a masterpiece for the ages.
